🌴 Three Keralas
Hills, backwaters and coast — and the order matters
Kerala stacks three landscapes into a narrow strip. The Western Ghats along the eastern edge hold Munnar's tea and Thekkady's forest. Below them the land drops to the backwaters — canals, lakes and rice fields around Alleppey, much of it below sea level. Then the coast, from Varkala's cliffs down to Kovalam's bays.
Almost every good Kerala itinerary moves in that order: land at Kochi, go up to the hills while you are fresh, come down through the backwaters, finish at the sea. Reversing it means climbing to Munnar at the end of a beach holiday, which nobody enjoys. The roads are short in kilometres and long in hours, so we build in fewer stops than most operators suggest.
